Episode 22

Benin

Benin is a country whose government’s aim is to educate future generations about its long history of human suffering via the slave trade. There are a couple of museums in place just for this purpose. Yet, due to great poverty in the country it is ironic that many parents in desperation, send their children to work as servants in the homes of the wealthy, both in their own country and in neighbouring countries. It is also the birthplace of Vodou, a practice which voodoo stems from. This is a country where the Royal Python is welcomed into the homes nearby the Serpent Temple they are released from weekly, as they hunt for a meal. Those who’ve hosted a python visit will kindly return them to the temple at day’s end.
